Alright, remember when I had the worst day EVER because I lost all my kids in one day? Well, don't worry. The world has been made right. School officially started two days ago and my life feels complete again.
Sure, I spend a lot less time lounging around by the pool and a lot more time explaining why it isn't okay to sit inside of a garbage can (yes, I actually did this), but it's totally worth it.
Why?
Because of things like surface area.
You see, on Monday, I taught my second graders about surface area. We talked about how when an object has more surface area, there is more air resistance, so the object moves slower. Now, these are 7 and 8 year olds. The term 'surface area' doesn't mean much to them. What they really cared about was that we got to drop a lot of different things to see how fast they would hit the ground.
Or so I thought.
Then came today. As one of the boys in my class walked across the room, he snatched a post-it note from a girls desk. When she demanded it back, he tried to throw it at her. Being a post-it note, if didn't make it very far. So he crumbled it up and threw it at her again, this time succeeding. She looks at him, clearly distressed that her paper has been crumpled and do you know what he says?
"Well it had too much surface area."
So even if the rest of the kids only remember the bloody nose, the kleptomaniac, the throw-up and the kid stuck on top of the monkey bars, at least someone remembered what surface area is.
