We are learning about the continents at school. I feel like we are making great strides. At the beginning of the unit, they didn't even know we lived in North America. Now, they not only know which continent we live on, but most of them can even find it on a map now.
Everyday we have been studying a different continent and it's countries. As is expected, all my little Mormon kids love to chime in and point out that their dad or cousin or uncle or someone else that is somehow distantly related went to this country or that city on his or her mission. In fact, according to the second graders, some of their dads went to at least three different continents on their missions and speak 4 or 5 languages.
Today we were studying Africa and while looking at the map, they asked what the island on the side was. I informed them that is was Madagascar, and sparked this conversation with one of my boys.
"We thought my cousin was going to go to Madagascar on his mission."
"Where is he really going?"
"Montana"
"Where in Montana?"
"I think the Philippines."
Hmm. Well, he might have meant Billings. At least I hope so. If my kids are running around thinking there is a set of islands in the middle of Montana, I have obviously prematurely celebrated the geographic successes we've been having.
I did that unit for my TWS. A song that helps them is to the tune of Oh My Darlin' Clementine-
ReplyDelete"North America, South America, Europe, Asia,Africa, Australia, Antarctica, 7 Continents there are!" They loved that song. Let's just say we sang it all year.
Haha I love it! We tried a different version that went to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." It wasn't nearly as cool as yours!
